Spring Window

The wonderful people over at Sew, Mama, Sew! are hosting a wonderful pillow contest this month.  This was exactly what i needed to light a fire under my sewing machine this year.  I have been complaining about our old boring grey pillows for a while now and had intentions of making up some new ones for our living room couch.  Before the holidays I had purchased some 18″ pillow forms to get started.  Here I am 2.5 months later and I finally have some pillow covers for those forms.

I rifled through my fabric stash to see what I could come up with and found that I have a tendency to buy a lot of flower and bird oriented fabrics – go figure!  After looking around for some inspiration, how could I pass up a window pane theme?  If only I could look outside today and see bright cheery flowers and birds!  Here in Minneapolis we have a few months to go before any sort of flower will make an appearance out my window.

I took this opportunity to knock another to-do off of my list this year and quilted the fronts of the pillows.  My first pillow covers, my first quilting experience and I even successfully installed invisible zippers using the fabulous tutorial from Sew Katie Did.  My quilting consisted of straight line quilting, horizontally on one and vertically on the other.  If anyone has any tips on how to achieve a nice, even feed on a Singer Touch and Sew Slant-O-Matic, I’d love to hear them!  I was able to find a walking foot for it and installed it correctly, but there was no even feeding to be had on this machine.  If you’d like to see more pillow pictures, they are available on Flickr.

Next up is sewing up the pieces of my skirt that have been sitting in my workspace all cut out with their corresponding pattern pieces since (!)October.  I should also be working to finish up my Hedera socks as well, I suppose.  Shoot, while I’m at it I might as well post some pictures of my travels this year.  I guess I shouldn’t get too ambitious, but we’ll see what happens.  The forecast is for 6-10″ of snow tomorrow and I’ve been ready for spring to arrive for approximately three months already.
